Construction site CCTV: plan for a changing site

Plan construction site CCTV around changing boundaries, power, connectivity and response responsibilities throughout the programme.

Construction site CCTV needs to evolve with the programme. The entrance, storage compounds and working areas may all move between mobilisation and completion. A security arrangement that suited the first month can become less useful as structures rise, deliveries increase and access routes change.

Start with the site phases

Provide the security contractor with the current layout and expected changes. Identify compounds, entry points and areas where valuable materials or equipment will be stored. Distinguish working-hour requirements from out-of-hours concerns.

Agree review points around major changes, such as a new boundary, a relocated gate or the removal of temporary facilities. That creates a planned opportunity to assess coverage rather than waiting for an incident to reveal a blind spot.

Confirm power and connectivity

Explain which supplies and communications services are available and who controls them. Temporary arrangements can change during construction, so identify who must be told before a supply is disconnected or moved. Ask what the system reports when connectivity or power is lost.

Include the mounting and maintenance approach in the scope. Positions should be chosen through the site assessment, taking account of access, movement and construction activity. Do not assume a camera remains useful simply because it is still powered.

Decide what happens after an alert

A monitoring arrangement needs a response plan. Identify who receives alerts, who can authorise attendance and how the site can be accessed safely. NPSA guidance connects protective measures with the response required for the threats a site faces.

Keep contact details and access instructions current as subcontractors and site teams change. Review data-protection requirements and communicate the purpose of surveillance to the people affected.

Make demobilisation part of the brief

State when temporary equipment is expected to be removed and what records or footage need handling at project close. Agree responsibility for making good mounting locations and withdrawing user access. MCN Fire & Security can discuss a CCTV scope that follows your construction programme from set-up to handover.
